The Giraffe

Posted on

So on the theme of new things I was lucky enough to try out a new restaurant. When I use the term new I mean new to me, somewhere or something never been done before by myself. The Giraffe has a couple of different restaurants but the one I went to was one of the originals, as in just called ‘The Giraffe’.

I am aware that circumstances at such restaurants will always change how you feel about them and the food and of course staff so I will try to keep that in mind. For example I had been up since 5am, worked an 8 hour day and was meeting a friend I hadn’t seen in a long time! So I was very tired, most definitely hungry (which tends to make food taste better generally) and very happy to be catching up with an old friend. All of these things will possibly have affected this first experience. I love going to places I have never been before, I am familiar with the area but have never been into this restaurant, in any area.

The first thing I noticed was the funky design, modern, a slight South American feel but not tacky at all and a good feel about it. The staff were friendly which I think is something we should always expect! Manners don’t cost you a thing, are hardly difficult to muster and should come hand in hand with customer service. Something we often find lacking in this country.

The second thing that struck me was the music. I love music and it is almost always something I pick up on. If I have to spend a long period of time where there is music playing and it is pretty awful it tends to really annoy me, I have this problem at work sadly. The music at The Giraffe however is brilliant! Laid back but not too chilled, and also at a good volume, where you can hear it but it doesn’t affect conversations. On a day where I didn’t have to be up at 5am the next day I would most definitely have chosen a cocktail but instead I opted for a cider which was lovely. Rekordrlig, a Swedish cider which frankly craps on a lot of commercial ones you get today, it wasn’t too sweet and you could actually taste the apple! Also something new to me 😉

I’ll be honest I didn’t scan the menu as thoroughly as I usually do as time was limited and I was there to catch up with my friend more than the food but the Jambalaya Risotto jumped out at me straight away so I went with it. Both dishes I am a fan of and the two combined had to be good! Well I was right, it was delicious. You can have it with or without the meat and prawns, I opted for with. I love rice dishes because they tend to be less heavy than a lot of other meals. Risotto is quite tough to make look appealing in a bowl but it looked good, a mix of colours and the ingredients were sufficient. You would expect for the area for it to be a little pricey but for a good experience, good service and good food I have no problems handing over my hard earned cash. All in all a great experience and I would definitely visit again. I feel I need to be more prepared for this newness challenge and carry a camera as I don’t have any pictures. The one below is from another of their restaurants in London. I love their Love, Eat, Live motto. The other pictures and writing on the wall also make me love this place even more 🙂
